Dear JMP Parents,
Spring is in the air! It is amazing to see flowers already starting to bloom in
February. Just as these premature buds show, it is never too early to bloom. We
aspire to do this with ONK. We have learned that by being proactive, we can accomplish
great things.
We are planning many exciting events in the coming months and we hope that you will
find something that will inspire you to become more involved. Our greatness lies
in the strength of our members.
We are always open to new ideas so please feel free to contact us at any time. We
look forward to hearing from you soon.

Intern Appreciation Night

We have a fabulous group of interns this year and it is so sad to say goodbye.
Please join us for a festive evening to honor these exceptional women, their mentor
teachers and host families! It will be held at Richmond Elementary on Thursday,
March 11th from 6:30-8:30pm. A local Japanese performer, Kyoko Uchida has graciously
organized a circus act to start the evening off, followed by the Richmond Performing
Group. Light refreshments will be served and we will end our night with our beloved
interns singing.
If you see Chika, Yuko, Kazumi, Nanami, Yuka, Yoko, Erika, Maki, Yukiko, Tomoko
and Rumiko around the halls, please let them know how appreciated they are! Our
program wouldn't be the same without their daily commitment to our children's education.
Hope to see you all on the 11th!!
If you have any questions regarding the event or the Intern Program, please contact
Maya Mori at maya_mori at comcast.net [mailto:maya_mori at comcast.net].

New Intern Update

We are excited to announce the arrival of 19 interns to our program this spring!
There will be 14 at Richmond, 3 at Mt Tabor and 2 at Grant. This gives us an
intern in every Japanese classroom at Richmond and additional support for Mt Tabor
& Grant. A huge thank you to all the fabulous families who have stepped up to provide
homes for our new visitors! Oya No Kai will be fundraising to support the Intern
Program in new & creative ways. Look for information regarding the JMP cookbook,
the ONK Etsy Marketplace and our Fashion Show at the Someday Lounge on May 15th!!
A special thank you to Emi Avondstondt, Shawn Bowman and Desiree Miller for their
fabulous ideas and support of our program! Please consider donating to the intern
fund. For questions, please contact Maya Mori at maya_mori at comcast.net [mailto:maya_mori at comcast.net].
We are still looking for fall 2010 host families. If you are interested in having
this rewarding experience, please contact Melissa Gorgon Clark at mgorgon at yahoo.com
[mailto:mgorgon at yahoo.com].

Read-a-thon

Finally, read-a-thon updates are here. Students raised nearly $2,500 to support
their class funds. Here is a break down by grade:
Pre-K: $60
Kindergarten: $347
1st Grade: $168
2nd Grade: $606
3rd Grade: $125
4th Grade: $160
5th Grade: $1,015
The 5th grade class made enough to cover the cost of their trip director for their
5th grade cultural exchange. This money was raised with less than 10% participation.
If each class increased participation to 50%, this would be a great way to increase
class funds.
The class fund is used to pay for administrative costs of the cultural exchange
in 5th and 8th grade as well as paying for scholarships. As the cost of the trip
continues to increase, the reserved funds will be essential to ensure that each
child has the opportunity to participate in this amazing experience.
Over $3,000 was pledge so if you haven't sent in your donation, its not too late.
Donations can be turned in to the Oya No Kai box in the office.

Sumaura students spend a week in Portland!

During the week of Feb. 4th- 11th, 27 students from Kobe, spent a week with JMP
students and their families. Homestays and exchanges are an important part of the
JMP experience. Many thanks to all the families that shared their home with these
students. You have created life long memories. ONK would like to thank Ritsuko Fujiwara
and Melanie Scheuermann for organizing the homestays and events during the week.
We ask that you all consider being a host family in the future. Each year, many
of these families host our children in Japan and want to do our best to return the
favor!
