Through the trials and tribulations of building the first memorial to Civil
Rights, the Japanese American community came together to realize a dream,
and the Plaza was dedicated in August of 1990. The poetry of Lawson Inada,
among others, combines with the stunning and thoughtful design of landscape
designer Robert Murase and sculpture of Jim Gion to form not only a place of
respite within the city, but also a place of remembrance, and a place to
   both acknowledge and educate.

Not only does the Plaza bear the great national legacy as the first memorial
to civil liberties; additionally, it has been celebrated and recognized for
both its design and purpose, with a multitude of awards and acclaim
including the Portland Beautification Association_ Appreciation Award_
(1991), the American Institute of Architects _Design_ and _People’s Choice_
Awards (1990), the _ACLU Honor Award Commendation for Civil Liberties_
(1990) and The Waterfront Center (_Top Honor, Excellence on the Waterfront_,
   1991).

_About the Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center – The Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center
serves as a focal point for the preservation and sharing of the history and
culture of the Japanese American community. One of the most important
chapters in the Japanese American experience is the forced internment of
over 110,000 persons of Japanese descent during the Second World War. This
fuels our commitment to the preservation of civil rights for all Americans.
The Legacy Center is a venue for cultural and research activities and an
invaluable resource for the exploration of the experiences of Japanese
Americans and their role in Oregon's multi-cultural community._

_About the Oregon Nikkei Endowment - The mission of the Oregon Nikkei
Endowment is to preserve and honor the history and culture of Japanese
Americans in the Pacific Northwest, to educate the public about the Japanese
American experience during World War II, and to advocate for the protection
of civil rights for all Americans._
