Our amazing volunteers have been working tirelessly to organize homestays, recruit interns, plan an auction, plan cultural exchanges, host our sister schools, prepare for kurabu, participate at cultural events, and plan for Westwind. phew... The reason the JMP has been a model program has much to do with the incredible staff and faculty at our schools, but it also has to do with the parents who have dedicated themselves to its success. Volunteering for the school takes many forms from helping in the classroom to organizing major events. To ensure the continued success of the JMP we need every able parent to participate. Take a moment to consider your strengths and how you can best contribute to this program. Feel free to contact any of the ONK board members if you would like to assist in any of the activities listed below. ~ Volunteering is not a choice, it's a responsibility. ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Host an Intern Did you know that it costs Oya No Kai approximately $3,500.00 to support each intern? That might seem like a lot of money, but think about it this way: If each Japanese classroom had a full time Educational Assistant with an Associates Degree from a 2 year college, it would typically cost between $40,000.00 - $45,000.00 per year per classroom. All of our interns are graduates with (or in the process of completing) a 4 year college degree. Think about the value that these amazing volunteers contribute to our program! In terms of cost that equals $66,500.00 versus $855,000.00. That is a tremendous value but we can't do it without the generous support of our community. Please consider hosting an intern in your home for six-months or contributing money to the intern fund. For more information about hosting or donating, please contact: Melissa Gorgon Clark Host Family Coordinator Oya No Kai, Inc. mgorgon at yahoo.com [mailto:mgorgon at yahoo.com] 503-539-1008 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2010 Read-a-thon A big thank you to all those who participated in the Read-a-thon. Twenty-seven students will travel with 7 chaperones and an experienced Trip Director, Ando Sensei, leaving Portland on June 22nd and returning on July 6th. While in Japan they will visit our Cultural Exchange friends in Fukuno/Nanto City and Kobe (Sumaura), staying in pairs in homestays much like the Japanese students from those towns do while visiting Portland. During their stay in Japan they will also visit Takayama, Nara, Kyoto and Gokayama (a UNESCO World Heritage site) and end their travels at Nagashima Onsen. Airline tickets will be purchased soon and the students and chaperones will begin their preparatory classes too. The students will also begin rehearsing songs in both Japanese and English to perform while in Kobe and Fukuno. The 4th grade class has already started working on organization for their trip as future 5th graders in June 2012. Oya No Kai felt the need to start the process earlier than usual due to the larger class size and potential for increased interest in the trip. Our primary contact in Japan, Saino-san, asked that we give the communities in Japan more time to plan for the larger group size and thus wanted a ballpark group size to anticipate. We have over 70 students in the class of 85 students who are very interested in going--that is almost twice the size of any previous 5th grade travelling group! The 4th grade will have it's 2nd Mandatory Meeting on Tuesday February 8th in the Richmond Cafeteria and a letter of intent as well as an initial deposit will be due. If you are the parent of a 3rd grader and would like to witness the process, please feel free to attend--you'll be doing this before too long! Questions about the 5th grade trip or planning for future trips e-mail Teresa Schultz at schultzta at gmail.com [mailto:schultzta at gmail.com] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Auction needs you Tickets for this amazing event will be available starting Monday, January 24th!! Taiko is about community. One's own sense of individuality is strengthened and tempered by the interaction with the group and the group is strengthened by the unqualified commitment of the individual to play with heart. We are so excited to announce that JMP parents Kari Shawen & Kristina Kallen will be our MCs for the night (you may know them as the Richmond Office Dynamic Duo!) They will join auctioneer Brian Kennedy for the live auction. Nanda will be performing during the live auction. Characterized by a calculated chaos of dancing, juggling, music, acrobatics, and high energy kung-faux fighting; the show is all at once exuberantly innovative & widely appealing. Nanda defies convention & categorization by working within a limitless scope of imagination. Part ninja, part parody, part maestro, "Acrobaticalism" is the coined term forged to encompass the symphony of their high-energy visual performance. Image to be posted on the blog soon! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Visitors from Sumaura In response to the devastating Kobe earthquake in 1995, the Richmond JMP students raised money through a penny drive called "Friends Care for Their Friends" to send to the children of the ravaged city. The local YMCA facilitated the introduction to the Sumaura Elementary School. Sumaura is a 100-year-old private K-6 school. As part of our cultural exchange arrangement, 9 students from Sumaura will be visiting Richmond and Mt. Tabor between February 4th-11th. Thank you to all of the host families, teachers, and volunteers organizing this visit. Next year will be the first year that the Portland trip will be mandatory for the students at Sumaura and providing host families is essential to the success of this exchange. If you are interested in hosting these students please feel free to contact Alison Walcott at walcottma at msn.com [mailto:walcottma at msn.com]. Preference will be given to 5th graders who will be traveling to Kobe in the following summer. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Westwind Information It is time to start thinking about SPRING, and that means Camp Westwind! Get ready to enjoy the natural majesty and wonderful camaraderie of this annual Oya No Kai retreat to one of the most beautifully preserved natural areas on the Oregon coast. You will soon be able to register for these two annual Oya No Kai weekend retreats. Due to overwhelming popularity of this retreat experience in previous years, registration for Camp Westwind will now be done using a lottery system. The weekends for 2011 are- May 27-30 (Memorial Day 3-day weekend) June 3-5 (the following 2-day weekend) The registration process. Registration will begin in February and will remain open for one month. This will allow ample opportunity for any and all interested families and groups to register. You will register by filling out an online form at the Oya No Kai website. On the application you will be able to specify a weekend preference, and whether you can attend either weekend or only one specific weekend. At the end of the registration period, a lottery will be conducted to fill the two weekends. The families drawn first in the lottery will be assigned their first choice weekend. It will not matter when you turn in your application during the month. Each application will have the same likelihood of being drawn in the lottery process. No individual can be named on more than one application. We plan to post lottery results by email prior to the auction, on March 5th. There will be only a few guaranteed spots outside the lottery. There will be one cabin each weekend available to bid on at the auction on March 5th. The Japanese interns are all invited and sponsored by Oya No Kai. Half of the intern group will attend each weekend. Oya No Kai board members and those planning & organizing the weekend will also be granted spots. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Kurabu Kurabu is an all-in Japanese summer day camp for children who are entering kindergarten through fifth grade in the fall of 2011 and are currently in a Japanese immersion program or who speak Japanese at home. Look for registration forms in March, but until then, here are the session dates to help you plan your summer. June 27-July 1 July 5-8 July 11-15 July 18-22 This will be my last year acting as registrar for Kurabu. If you are interested in taking over this mostly-administrative job, please let me know.
